There are three types of car keys / remote fobs / smart keys that will need programming in order for you to be able to lock, unlock and start your car. One is an emergency transponder key, this is a key that has a transponder in the key head that is coded to your car but does not have buttons on it to remotely open and lock your car.

The other is a traditional remote fob which does have buttons to open and unlock your car and also has a transponder in it which needs to be coded to your car.
