Types of Lock

Door Lock Repairs Mortice Lock

Mortice Lock Repairs

Mortice lock – These locks come as deadlocks (no handle required) and sash lock (a handle is required as the lock has a bolt and a latch). They are normally found on wooden doors. There are many different companies who manufacture these types of locks, some are very basic and come with little or no protection and others meet British standards so have been tested against drilling, picking and hacksawing the bolt.

We only fit British standard 5 lever mortice locks that come with a 10-year mechanical warranty and a 1-year workmanship guarantee from us.

If you have more than one mortice lock fitted to your home or office, why not have all the locks working from the same key (keyed alike).

We can do all this for you and cut additional keys.

Euro Cylinder Locks

Euro Cylinder Lock

There are 3 main standards of euro cylinder available today. Basic 5 or 6 pin cylinders with little or no protection against the main threats which are snapping, drilling, bumping, plug-pull and picking. The basic (cheap) versions are generally poorer quality.

Then there are 1-star British standard kitemarked euro cylinders which offer protection from picking, drilling and may have sacrificial snapping points but does NOT protect against snapping. Then there are the 3-star high-security euro cylinders which offer protection against snapping, bumping, drilling, picking and plug pulling.

These cylinders offer the highest levels of protection. You can also add additional features to euro cylinders such as keyed alike (1 key operates all locks), Master keyed system, often used commercially in schools, businesses and hotels etc. This is where there will be 1 key that opens every lock in the building but individual keys only open their allocated doors.

These lock types are found on euro mortice locks for wooden doors, UPVC door, Aluminium doors, composite doors and garage doors.

Rim Lock Night Latch

Rim Locks (Night latches)

There are 2 standards for theses surface mounted locks, basic surface mounted lock with deadlocking or non-deadlocking function. This lock is easily bypassed, so is not insurance approved.

Then there is the British standard night latch, this is also surface mounted but is also chiselled into the edge of the door and has more fixing points to secure it.

They also have protection against being bypassed through slipping the latch and have a more robust door frame keep than standard night latches. The rim cylinders come with anti-drill and anti-pick protection so ARE insurance approved.

You can get versions that you can lock with a key from the inside for additional protection for private homes or without the locking function for use in flats, multi-occupancy housing etc. Speak to us about which version would be best for your property.

Mulit Pint Locks

Multi-Point Locking System

Multi-point locking systems can be found on composite, UPVC, wooden and aluminium door types.

Multi-point locking is a system that when the door handle is lifted engages up to 4 hooks, 1 bolt and 2 pins to secure your door in the frame.

The door is locked normally with a euro cylinder to secure the multi-point system in place. These have a good level of security depending on the door type they are fitted to and what type of euro cylinder has been used.

As with most locks, you get cheap basic versions with less locking points and you get very secure approved systems that offer far better protection. These types of systems are used by residential and commercial customers.

Smart Locks

These locks can be fitted to both wooden and Composite / UPVC door types. They negate the need for a key to get into the property, so are very appealing as they are convenient and there is no longer a risk of losing keys.

The type for the wooden door fixes to the outside of an existing night latch, you gain entry by typing in a 4 digit code, presenting a fob to the lock or by Bluetooth on your mobile phone. On a composite or UPVC door, you present your mobile to the lock or use a fob or card to unlock the door.

These types of lock are used on homes and businesses such as multi-occupancy housing, homes where carers need access and Airbnb properties as well as some hotels due to their convenience.

Although many manufacturers offer a smart lock to the market, only one manufacturer at the moment can claim to meet British standards, Yale.

Digital Code Locks

These are called digital code locks but are manual push-button locks. You type in a letter then 4 digit code and another letter to unlock.

This lock is fairly basic and not high security so generally, it will be used for internal doors for offices, shops and the like but do get used on gates and external doors. These are simple to bypass and you need to remove the lock to change the code so are not always convenient.

Electronic Code Locks

Other versions of code locks such as the electronic versions are far more convenient to use and offer far better security as they can tell you who has entered a building, at what door and the time they entered.

You can remotely prevent or grant access via your computer and even restrict the time the person can use their code or fob.

These versions are normally commercial use such as gates, outside doors and hospitals. You can also change the code without removing the lock.

  • When our daughter snapped her key in the lock late at night, Scott’s calm and pleasant demeanour completely took the emotion and fear out of the event. He quickly fixed the problem, and the time he’d left, we felt as though we’d made a friend.
We would recommend him without a moment's hesitation.
